CMG SUPPORTS UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY PETROLEUM ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATE DESIGN CLASS

For many years CMG has supported the University of Calgary, and other universities, through the provision of its reservoir simulation software for use by faculty, graduate students, and under-graduate students.

Fourth year Petroleum Engineering students are required to complete an oil or gas field development plan as part of their studies.  This involves the extensive use of reservoir simulation technology, often of an advanced nature.

For the 2003-2004 session the class was split into five teams, each with a different field or project to develop.  Studies ranged from gas field development, through CO2 injection, to thermal recovery using SAGD technology.  All three CMG simulators (IMEX, GEM, and STARS) were used by the students, as well as CMG’s Builder and Results suite of pre and post-processors.

CMG offered a prize for the team showing the best overall use of simulation technology and associated graphical presentation of their findings.  This year the prize was a copy of the book “Practical Reservoir Simulation” by Mike Carlson, and it was presented to the team responsible for the analysis and design of the Conoco-Phillips Surmont SAGD pilot.

The article below is a short review of this project.  Also attached are some photographs from the presentation ceremony at CMG’s Calgary office.
